Mimi Brown shares her experience of evacuating during the fire and witnessing its devastating impact on Altadena, a historic Black middle-class community. Episode one delves into the widespread destruction, where more than 9,000 structures were lost, disproportionately affecting Black families. Among the personal stories highlighted is Edgar Johnson’s, a longtime resident who desperately tried to fight the flames with a garden hose before realizing he had no choice but to flee, losing everything in the process. Willie Johnson also reflects on the tragedy, recalling the heartbreaking moment he discovered his neighbor, Victor Shaw, who stayed behind to protect his home but tragically did not survive.
